Broad‐scale genetic monitoring suggests density‐dependent dispersal in a large carnivore

چکیده
Characterizing patterns and drivers of dispersal is fundamental to our understanding animal ecology ultimately informing species conservation management strategies. In this study, we used microsatellite data from 3941 individual black bears Ursus americanus occupying 73 spatially distinct sampling areas across a large heterogeneous landscape characterize via gene flow directionality. We fit spatial models quantified test hypotheses regarding putative patterns. Specifically, tested the relative influence food productivity gradients, bear density, harvest on dispersal. also evaluated differences in within between sexes assess sex-biased found evidence suggestive positive density-dependent, male-biased Our show relationship broad gradients. male displayed preferential towards mixed deciduous forests with higher less productive boreal forests. Given dense scheme continuous population, landscape, these results provide key insight as likely wide-ranging mammal.

Genetic consequences of sex-biased dispersal in a solitary carnivore: Yellowstone cougars.
Male-biased dispersal is a common trait in mammals, including carnivores, but its genetic consequences at the population level have been rarely considered for solitary species. We used long-term genetic data from cougars (Puma concolor) in and around Yellowstone National Park to test predictions based on differences in dispersal behaviour among males and females. Consistent with frequent long-d...

Demographic mechanisms underpinning genetic assimilation of remnant groups of a large carnivore.
Current range expansions of large terrestrial carnivores are occurring following human-induced range contraction. Contractions are often incomplete, leaving small remnant groups in refugia throughout the former range. Little is known about the underlying ecological and evolutionary processes that influence how remnant groups are affected during range expansion. We used data from a spatially exp...
متن کاملLarge-Scale Genetic Structuring of a Widely Distributed Carnivore - The Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx)
Over the last decades the phylogeography and genetic structure of a multitude of species inhabiting Europe and North America have been described. The flora and fauna of the vast landmasses of north-eastern Eurasia are still largely unexplored in this respect. The Eurasian lynx is a large felid that is relatively abundant over much of the Russian sub-continent and the adjoining countries. Analyz...
متن کاملWindscapes and olfactory foraging in a large carnivore
The theoretical optimal olfactory search strategy is to move cross-wind. Empirical evidence supporting wind-associated directionality among carnivores, however, is sparse. We examined satellite-linked telemetry movement data of adult female polar bears (Ursus maritimus) from Hudson Bay, Canada, in relation to modelled winds, in an effort to understand olfactory search for prey. In our results, ...
